Artist's Comment
I pause and recognize that this art may disturb many. How the cross can be a thing of beauty is strange to those that are not its adherents. Those of the Faith view the suffering and death as Divine love and mercy for all humanity. Indeed, it is a terrible beauty, an immense paradox.

For the most part, in this country we tend to make Christ look like he was a man out of European culture, or sometimes African American. I like the idea of Christ looking more like a Jewish man, side locks of hair and all. I did it that way because I have never seen him depicted on a cross in a manner that authentically indicates that he was a Jew. His hair has the hint of "ruddy" so as to suggest that he is from the line of King David, like the scriptures tell that Messiah would be.

My pencil drawing and some details about the art are at the site, as well as some ideas behind the art and things that I needed to get off my chest. If you are not into talking about religion, politics, and racism, just check out the art. The art encapsulates the written ideas that are there anyway. My art is a mixed media sandwich made up of many, many layers of digital painting with my pencil drawing being the meat in the middle.

Wow... art of the week - I am honored. Thank you. Good feedback. I will think about these things - the wall and all. Below is the text that inspired the art:

EVEN THE CRIMINALS CRUCIFIED WITH HIM WERE INSULTING HIM THE SAME WAY. NOW FROM THE SIXTH HOUR THERE WAS DARKNESS OVER ALL THE LAND UNTIL THE NINTH HOUR. AND ABOUT THE NINTH HOUR JESUS CRIED WITH A LOUD VOICE, SAYING, ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI? THAT IS TO SAY, MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?

yes, that wall of a sky, very empty
it does draw my eyes to the detail on the hands tho, making them really stand out, then down his arms and to his facial expression
but then if i move them up to the intersection of the cross that empty sky really hits me.
so i agree with jonathan about the clouds or something, not much, but something
but id still give it a 7 if i could, but i can only go up to 5 :D
very good, j'adore

Very nicely done. And thank you most of all for the message.

My only real critique is that 3/4 of the picture is empty sky. Not just sky, but flat, empty sky. I think going into the clouds with your pencil drawing would help fill out the negative space much better.

The angle on Jesus and the expression on his face are amazingly done though. Top marks.

I'm not a religious person myself, but I find myself quite moved by this. I like how it shows the gritty and painful reality of crucifixion. I also admire the depth of thought that has gone into this piece.

As a believer I cringe when I see Jesus portrayed as a blue-eyed blonde European rather than what he was: Jewish. So I appreciate this work. Beautiful job. Beautiful Savior!
