A surfer's silhouette standing in a giant "tube" - waves about to crash onto his head. This image is very dramatic. It has movement and a sense of the "decisive moment" as Henri Cartier-Bresson put it (if that could be said to be applicable to a drawing rather than a photograph). The artist chooses a sketchy inc style to rough in the scene. The lines crash into eachother, scatter and don't seem to obey any rules of nature. Looking down the end of the forming tube, the style is chaotic, out of focus. The artist seems to be looking at the effects of the water and not the pure visual design. It gives a sense of haste. Maybe immaturity. Perhaps insecurity. If the visual metaphor of a wave collapsing onto a dwarfed surfer should be explored further; the uncertain style, the dotty, rough and crazed "lineage" seem to reveal a novice artist, at once battling his own insecurities and some strong inner force that feel almost overwhelming. Even the "M" at the rightmost lower corner seems unsteady. Like it's being affected by the power of the wave and wind in the image. The question is: what powerful influence is the artist affected by? What emotional "Big Kahuna" is looming just beneath the surface of this image?
