As a childhood bookworm, I read through the local library’s entire collection of youth classics before the end of fourth grade. Over the years I have expanded my resources and today actively visit five different libraries. Several months ago I decided to create a poster series encouraging children to read more classical literature.
The first installment in the series highlights J.M. Barrie’s beloved Peter Pan. Before commencing the design process, I researched both the classic story line and the posters used to promote cinematic representations of the story. Competing with a Disney work was not my goal so I endeavored to create an entirely new portrayal to avoid any comparison. I avoided showing Peter’s body and hook’s face to avoid conflictions with the children’s pre-conceived notions. I placed premium importance on achieving a general glow from the center of the work that would invite closer examination and curiosity.
All base images were secured from devianart.com, a resource for registered, royalty-free stock imaging. In order to display the poster publicly, I had to achieve model release forms for each. The individual images were then manipulated to form a harmonious composition.
Once completed, I ordered five, 12” by 18” prints. They will be posted in libraries across the Inland Empire. Perhaps by capturing the children’s attention graphically, creating a starting point for their imaginations, I can install a greater desire to explore and enjoy the books I loved so dearly as a little girl. |
