Elizabeth Tudor (Portraits) digital artwork by vivien hulbert

Artist's Comment
I painted this image using Photoshop CS2. I started digital painting over a year ago but had a bit of a "creative block" and did next to nothing for a long period, being a bit confused as to what aspect of digital art I really wanted to do seriously. I finally realised that digital painting was what I really loved to do, and started again with this portrait.
The history of the royal family has always fascinated me, with it's strange stories of love, death, corruption and so on, so this image was really fun to make, I felt really "involved" in it! I hope you too can make up a story behind Elizabeth's eyes and her pose, and wonder just what she was thinking....and most of all I really hope you like it :-)
The reference is a photograph from a user called "Lockstock" who can be found on deviantart.com.

Outstanding! It looks very photorealistic and you really get a sense of the powder texture on her face. They eyes look freakishly lifelike and you even pay attention to the veins in her hands. One of my favourite pieces on here!

This is stunning work! The tonal quality of the skin is exquisite. You gave her skin a beautiful translucence that makes her face seem to glow. The eyes are remarkable and beautifully rendered. Congratulations on a magnificant piece of art!

Thanks so much for the art of the week :) I would also like to share the making of thread with you which can be found here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=408851 you can also see the reference there. although I am proud of this piece (it took me quite a long time to do it, almost a month working off and on) I consider it nothing more than "practice" since I put nothing of my own in it except the background. It was critised as being highly referenced and of course it is, I clearly stated that in my post along with the image, and I do not expect anyone to call it "art" as one could call a Bergkvist painting or other masters works. It is merely a reproduction, since I still don't feel skilfull enough to create an image from scratch. I just tried to make the painting as similar as possible to the photograph, nothing more nothing less. Just thought I'd make that clear since in another forum a moderator decided to put my piece in the "photomanipulation" section which I found very insulting and sad after all the work that I put into it. Thanks for reading and thanks so much for looking.
