Hyperstills 1.0 | John Vega
Following in the wake of Wirescapes, Hyperstills expands further on the notion of Action Painting by transporting it into the realm of interactive virtual sculpture and animated 3D space. In order to explore the inherent collaborative process between artist and machine, I create conditions that generate unlimited representations of a fleeting moment. My approach harnesses dynamic instructions (scripts) for creating a still image or living scene, by which I choreograph “impossible” 3D objects, surfaces, textures and lights. By “impossible,” I mean Escher-esque forms that defy our expectations or understandings of the natural laws of perspective and physics, but somehow make sense for the viewer. For example, I might tweak the formula for a torus (a doughnut-like geometric shape) to create something that could never exist in Nature (or could it?). The scripts inform and alter the character of the objects over time, yielding infinite underlying forms. |
