You know, somewhere along the line I missed the work of P.A. James.
Fortunately for me, today that has changed.
As aspiring artists, we should take note of the some of the techniques employed here.
What causes this work succeed is not only the obvious attention to detail (I am referring to consistency in execution of mark not necessarily how photo realistic something is rendered), the conscious control of the color palette to the degree that tonally and compositionally this would stand alone perfectly fine even if completely desaturated.
Bouguereau’s “The Madonna of the Roses is another work for which this is true.
This work appears to have been made first as a competent monochrome and completed with color. The cool blues with their (albeit western) connotations of spiritual/mythological color significance are also a good choice for this particular topic.
Nicely done.
Any plans to depict Graback, Grafvolluth, Goin, or Moin?
