This is well done. Even the lightning which can be used in a cheesy way is in this case included as an element with attention paid to composition.
The positive-negative figure relationship deftly illustrates the very tangible (solid, positive, "real") casualties of war while at the same time showing the emptiness of the survivors (can be read as wounded, literally missing body parts, or emotional guilt as a result of having survived, or perhaps the holes left by dead family and comrades.) Waves upon wave, as in fields of battle, yeah I am digging this.
Symbolically there is a lot happening here.
