The Heart Box (Fantasy) digital artwork by Daniel Cook

Artist's Comment
An older Valentine, but still quite enjoyable. This was painted in Painter using the Scratchboard Tool and Just Add Water.

Why use only two tools out of a hundred? I find that I'm a bit of Luddite when it comes to my digital pictures. All these fancy cloning/airbrushing/photoreference tools are occasionally useful, but I worry about that dread plastic look so prevalent in computer art. There's nothing like the hint of real brush strokes to make me start grinning with appreciation. An image that emerges from a hundred thousand human movements is somehow more impressive to me than one that results from a dozen button clicks.

All this, of course, makes me a completely irrational hypocrite considering my chosen media. ;-)

When you comment, feel free to rate the piece and let me know what specifically could be improved. Check out some of my other art at www.lostgarden.com

Aye, I pumped up the saturation a bit due to the way it was printing out on my Epson 2000p.

I lay down the basic shapes with the scratchboard tool and then blend them together with 'just add water'. By varying the pressure of the 'just add water', you can subtly blend areas with great accuracy. For years, I thought everyone worked this way. ;-)

Wow, only those two tools? I'd be interested to know how you got such a full look out of the scratchboard tool--did you leave down big chunks of color first, then blend them together with the water tool?

One thing I'm noticing in the thumbnail here is that her face is too bright and saturated, when compared to her body (which has more realistic tones to it). Also, I'm not entirely sure what she holds in her hands, but I might not have looked close enough at it.
