It was originally just a scribble but eventually it snowballed into a massive texture experiment. All textures used are hand drawn. The image took 4 days to make, I am unsure of the number of hours.

I used adobe photoshop, so you know its done without special brushes. The wing texture was a gaussian noise with a motion blur. The main metal was really hard and consists of a huge number of shades of gray at approximately 50% opacity over a blue gray solid layer, that was then dodged and burned. The effect was gotten thanks to my pentools feature and tablet allowing color to change depending on pressure.
I'll be making a full tutorial on this pic for my website when it's finally finished.
